BBOXX designs, manufactures, and distributes solar-powered systems that offer electricity access to off-grid communities across Africa and Asia.
BBOXX is an innovative clean energy startup founded in 2010 by Mansoor Hamayun, Christopher Baker-Brian, and Laurent Van Houcke, three Imperial College London graduates with a shared purpose for creating a sustainable and accessible product that would transform lives. The company strives to provide affordable, clean, and reliable energy solutions to underserved communities, primarily in developing countries.
BBOXX’s business model revolves around the concept of Solar as a Service. This entails providing customers with solar home systems including includes solar panels, a battery, LED lights, a charging kit for devices, and occasional additional appliances including radios and televisions. The customers pay for the system on a pay-as-you-go basis, using mobile money to make affordable regular payments. This payment system makes solar power accessible to households and businesses that otherwise might not afford the initial capital outlay.
BBOXX has installed solar systems in thousands of homes, permanently transforming the lives of millions of people across over 35 countries. The provision of reliable electricity has substantially reinforced education quality through extended schooling house, improved community health by replacing harmful kerosene lamps, and boosted economic wealth by enabling small businesses to operate on a wider scale.
BBOXX utilises a smart solar platform called BBOXX Pulse to manage customer data, payments, and battery performance. This technology allows for remote monitoring and troubleshooting of the systems, ensuring high service levels and operational efficiency.
By providing an effective renewable energy source, BBOXX helps reduce the use of fossil fuels while combating deforestation by decreasing reliance on wood as fuel. These critical movements contribute to the mitigation of climate change and act as a source of profound support for local environments.
BBOXX has formed meaningful partnerships with influential stakeholders including governments, NGOs, and prominent companies to expand its reach and impact. The company’s collaboration with the government of Rwanda in a national electrification program stands out as a particularly impactful alliance, which among others have proven crucial to scaling company operations and maximising developmental impact.
BBOXX has attracted significant investment from venture capital firms, development finance institutions, and strategic partners. The company’s funding includes capital from Africa Infrastructure Investment Managers (AIIM), ENGIE, and the EDF Group, reflecting confidence in its business model and acknowledgment of its potential impact on energy access in developing regions.
We are proud to have played a role in supporting BBOXX’s mission equipping African and Asian low-income communities with clean, reliable, and affordable energy solutions. Recognising the transformative potential of BBOXX’s innovative solar solutions, we contributed myriad resources and strategic guidance to fuel proactive solutions for navigating the complex regulatory and operational challenges of achieving exponential growth. Our commitment extends beyond traditional investment, encompassing active participation in sustainability initiatives and advocacy for renewable energy policies. Through cultivating a trust-based partnership, Esponda Capital has significantly contributed to BBOXX’s capacity to impact lives through improved access to electricity while driving social and economic development in the world’s most remote areas.
